Clay Bar Treatment
Bonded contamination sheared off so the paint feels glass-smooth again.
Run your hand over a clean panel through a plastic bag. If it feels gritty rather than smooth, the paint is carrying bonded contamination that washing does not remove — industrial fallout, rail dust, overspray, and hardened road film.
Clay shears that material off at the surface. It is a standard step before any wax, sealant, or coating, because protection applied over contamination does not bond correctly.

How it fits into a detail
Clay comes after washing and chemical decontamination, not instead of it. Removing iron chemically first means far less mechanical work for the clay, which reduces marring.
The surface is kept flooded with lubricant throughout, and the clay is folded frequently so nothing picked up gets dragged back across the paint.
Afterward
Clay leaves paint bare and slightly more prone to light marring, so the panel is always polished or protected the same day. On darker colors we typically follow with a light polish before applying protection.
Frequently asked questions
Does clay remove scratches?
No. Clay removes contamination sitting on top of the paint. Defects in the clear coat need polishing.
How often should paint be clayed?
Once or twice a year for an outdoor-parked car, less for a garaged one. The bag test tells you.
